The Celebrating Women in Toxicology (CWIT) award was inspired by the generosity of Ms. Anne Wolven Garrett, one of the early leaders in the field of toxicology. The initial seed money of $8,000 was donated by Ms. Wolven Garrett's estate and this is now one of the endowed WIT awards. Please note that the CWIT is given at all levels of educational and professional development, i.e., separate awards at the undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral levels. Please apply accordingly as the requirements are different.
Ms. Wolven Garrett was one of the first women active in SOT's leadership. Beginning in the early 1970s, she served on several elected and appointed committees, including as Historian, and as Vice President and President of a Regional Chapter. As noted during her memorial service in 2012, she was especially proud of her work with the Society. She was known for taking budding toxicologists under her wing and ended many conversations with “hug yourself; you are very special.”
As a tribute to Ms. Wolven Garrett and all past and future female leaders of SOT, the CWIT award will recognize and encourage women who are in the early stages of developing their careers in the field of toxicology.
The CWIT award is selected based on scientific merit and outstanding demonstration of leadership and service to the scientific/toxicology community and given to female WIT member(s) engaged in academic study towards a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in toxicology (or related field) and/or post-doctoral fellows engaged in research activities in the field of toxicology (or related field).
The awardee will receive an engraved plaque and a monetary award. The monetary award is intended for education and/or research-related expenses, including travel to scientific conferences.
Applicant SOT Membership Requirements:
Undergraduate students
- Enrolled in a bachelor’s program in toxicology (or a closely related discipline)
- Student member of WIT SIG at application deadline
Graduate students (Master’s degree or PhD)
- Enrolled in a graduate program in toxicology (or a closely related discipline)
- Student member of WIT SIG at application deadline
- Student member of SOT at application deadline
Postdoctoral fellows
- Current postdoctoral fellow in academia, industry, or government in the discipline of toxicology (or closely related discipline)
- Postdoctoral member of WIT SIG at application deadline
- Postdoctoral member of SOT at application deadline
Required application components:
- All applications should detail the applicant’s demonstrated leadership and service in the field of toxicology or closely related discipline (examples include but are not limited to elected or appointed leadership positions in local or global scientific organizations, service to scientific organizations or events within their academic institution or community, e.g., such as a judge at a science fair, coordinator of a scientific seminar series, etc.). These criteria, with others listed below, are used in the award selection process.
- 1-page narrative describing the leadership and service to the scientific/toxicology community (written text 12 pt. Times New Roman)
- 1-page narrative describing ongoing research project or research interests in the field of toxicology (written text 12 pt. Times New Roman).
- 2 letters of recommendation describing the applicant’s leadership and service to the scientific/toxicology community. In addition to some mention of scientific achievement, letters should focus on recognition of the student's/postdoc’s demonstration of leadership and service in toxicology and/or their community. One of these letters must be from a Full, Associate, or Emeritus SOT member.
- Curriculum vitae of the applicant that includes specific descriptions of the applicant's scientific and leadership qualifications – 10 pages maximum.
- Headshot/photograph image of sufficient quality for poster and presentation materials (Note: This requirement does not factor into the selection of the awardee; it is to have the information on hand to develop WIT announcements and annual meeting materials ly.)
Additional application criteria or constraints:
- Students and Postdoctoral applicants can only apply for one (1) WIT award per year. Applying for this award does not limit you to applying for other SOT awards. WIT awards are independent of other SOT Awards.
- Graduate students and Postdoctoral Fellows are eligible to receive (1) WIT award during their training period.
