Description
The Molecular and Systems Biology Specialty Section (MSBSS) is pleased to request submissions for the MSBSS Graduate Student Research Award. Applicants must be full-time graduate students at the award submission deadline, graduate student members (accepted or pending) of SOT, and be a member of MSBSS at the time the award is presented. The research reported in the application must have been conducted while the author was engaged in a mentored graduate research position, although the author may or may not still be in the graduate position at time of the meeting.
Applications should include
- A combined single PDF document (non-PDF documents, e.g. Microsoft Word, will not be considered) submitted by the applicant that includes- 1) a copy of the abstract that they submitted for the upcoming SOT Annual Meeting and 2) a two-page narrative that contains: a paragraph on the problem the research addresses and the hypothesis of the work; a paragraph on the methods used and main findings of the work; a paragraph on the major conclusions and relevance to the field of Molecular and Systems Biology/Toxicology; and a paragraph explicitly stating the applicant’s direct contributions to the conception of the idea, experimental design, and execution and analyses of the data represented in the abstract. Data or research design visualizations that help convey the research are highly encouraged. The narrative should be formatted in single spaced 11-point Times New Roman font with one-inch margins. A reference section is not required.
- Optional: Travel award. One student or postdoctoral researcher will receive this award, intended for early career scientists who have faced unique challenges in their career path including, but not limited to, self-identification as from an underrepresented or disadvantaged background, socioeconomic challenges, disability status, etc. If you would like to be considered for the travel award, please attach an additional page titled “Travel Award application” and include a description (not to exceed 250 words) of how your unique background has influenced your career path and how the travel award would support your success. This will be part of your combined PDF.
The combined submission should be named in the following format: "Lastname_Firstname_Grad". No letters of recommendation are requested.
Three awards will be given: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place with a monetary award and a certificate/plaque at the MSBSS reception during the SOT annual meeting. All three research awardees will be invited to showcase their research by giving a presentation sponsored by MSBSS later in the year. The travel award winner will be provided funds to help offset the cost of attending the Annual Meeting. Receipts must be provided for all disbursement requests. Meeting attendance is required to receive this travel award.
Applications will be judged on their relevance and novelty to molecular and systems toxicology, logic and flow, and quality of the hypothesis, experimental methods or model, results and discussion of findings.
