MixSS Jane Ellen Simmons Travel Award
Opens: August 15th
Deadline: November 13th
The SOT Mixtures Specialty Section (MixSS) strongly believes that the future of mixtures research is dependent on today’s students, postdocs, and young investigators. MixSS will host a virtual meeting where students, postdocs, and young investigators will have the opportunity to present projects related to the mixtures field and compete for a cash award to support their travel to the SOT Annual Meeting. The travel award will be conferred in honor and remembrance of our dear colleague, Dr. Jane Ellen Simmons. Jane Ellen deeply cared about the protection of the environment, contributed immensely to the field of mixtures research and risk assessment, and supported young scientists during their career development. She also helped found the MixSS and served in the inaugural Presidential chain from 2007 to 2010. We are indebted to her service and legacy.
If you would like to be considered for this award, please submit the following by November 13th:
● Original Abstract
o Including but not limited to the abstract submitted for the upcoming SOT Annual Meeting. Applicants should not have received any monetary awards from the MixSS within the last 5 years for the same project/abstract.
● A letter of recommendation from your supervisor
● Proof of eligibility for your current position (student, postdoc, or young investigator),
o For students and postdocs, confirmation of status in the recommendation letter.
o For young investigators, proof of the year you earned your highest degree (not to exceed 5 years from the time the highest degree (e.g., master, PhD) was earned).
Selected applications will be invited to participate in the “Jane Ellen Simmons Invited Seminar”. Seminar presentation slots are anticipated to be 10-15 minutes. The seminar presentations will be judged by an expert panel, and the winning presentation will receive a monetary travel award presented at the SOT Annual Meeting.
Consideration for this award is distinct from other SOT MixSS awards such as the “Best Student/Postdoc Abstract” award. Applicants are encouraged to apply for all MixSS awards they are eligible for, but only one award per applicant will be given per award cycle.
If you have any questions, please send an email to SOTmixSS@gmail.com using the subject line “Jane Ellen Simmons Travel Award Question”.
