Description
The Inhalation and Respiratory Specialty Section (IRSS) of the Society of Toxicology (SOT) is now accepting applications for the Outstanding Graduate Student Award. The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding contributions of graduate students in the area of inhalation or respiratory toxicology. The applicant must be a current graduate student. Submission of an abstract to the SOT Annual meeting is also required. Applications will be reviewed for scientific merit and service will be considered for this award. Note that recipients of an IRSS Student Award in the previous year disqualifies the applicant for the current year. Awardees will receive an engraved plaque and cash award of $500 during the IRSS business meeting at the annual SOT meeting.
The application for the Student Award should consist of one PDF document that contains the following items:
- Cover letter from the trainee indicating his/her intent to apply for this award and interest in attending the Annual Meeting.
- Current curriculum vitae for the student (maximum of 5 pages).
- Copy of pending abstract for platform or poster presentation for presentation at the SOT Annual Meeting.
- A short statement (300 words or less) submitted by the student. This statement should include the rationale for the study, the significance of the results, and the student’s role in the work and how this relates to inhalation/respiratory toxicology and will influence their career goals.
- A letter of support from the student advisor or major professor. This letter should highlight the applicant's contributions to the research being presented, the applicant’s overall scientific achievement and contribution to respiratory/inhalation toxicology, and a description of their leadership and service activities (examples include elected/appointed leadership positions, service within institution or community, teaching/mentoring activities). Additionally, the letter should provide details on the applicant's collaborative efforts and initiative.
- Headshot to include in annual business meeting if application is awarded. This is not part of the selection criteria.
Applicants for the Outstanding Graduate Student Award must be members of the Inhalation and Respiratory Specialty Section.
Students can only apply to either the Mary Amdur Award or the Student Award, but not both.
Each sponsor can only nominate one student for each award category.
A list of past recipients of the IRSS student award can be found in our annual newsletters.
